A date to protect the roots of coastal life
On July 26, UNESCO proclaimed the commemoration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, a date that seeks to highlight the ecological, climatic, and social importance of mangroves worldwide.
Today, this day serves as a global call to action to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems, which are among the most productive and threatened habitats on Earth.
Why Are Mangroves So Important?
Mangroves are coastal forests that grow in tropical and subtropical regions, thriving between land and sea. Often overlooked, these ecosystems offer critical environmental benefits:
- Coastal protection: They shield shorelines from erosion and storm surges.
- Biodiversity hotspots: Mangroves serve as natural nurseries for fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.
- Climate regulation: They are among the most efficient ecosystems at capturing and storing carbon, helping combat climate change.
- Water purification: Mangroves trap sediments and pollutants, improving water quality.
- Livelihood support: Many coastal communities rely on mangroves for traditional fishing and ecotourism.
Mexico and Its Mangroves: Natural Wealth and Shared Responsibility
Regarding mangrove surface area, Mexico ranks fifth globally, making it one of the countries with the largest extent of these ecosystems. They are found mainly in the states of Campeche, Tabasco, Veracruz, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, and Baja California Sur.
Of the 54 mangrove species in the world, our country has 4: red mangrove, white mangrove, black mangrove, and buttonwood. However, many of them are in danger due to uncontrolled urbanization, mass tourism, and extractive industries.
For these reasons, since 2005, CONABIO has been developing the Mangrove Monitoring System of Mexico to increase knowledge and awareness for better planning and management of this ecosystem throughout the country.
Conserving mangroves not only protects biodiversity, but also means caring for the relationship between humans and nature on the coasts. Their degradation can have serious consequences for food security, ecological balance, and the fight against global warming.
