May 18th marks the International Day for Women in Maritime, a date promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) since 2021, with the purpose of recognizing the contribution of women in an industry historically dominated by men.
In a sector as demanding as maritime and offshore, where operations require precision, resilience, and commitment, the presence of women not only brings diversity but also improves efficiency and strengthens human talent at all levels.
A Landscape That Is Beginning to Change
For decades, women were made invisible within the maritime sphere. Nautical training, the operation of oil platforms, leadership in port logistics, and technical work on board were seen as exclusively male territories. However, in the last 20 years, there has been a significant change.
According to the IMO, only 1.2% of the global maritime workforce are women, and the majority are found on cruise ships. Despite this, more and more women are accessing key roles in navigation, naval engineering, maritime safety, maritime law, port administration, and offshore operations.
Various studies from international organizations such as the ILO and the UN indicate that organizations with greater gender diversity are more productive, creative, and sustainable. In the maritime sector, this translates into better decision-making, safer work environments, and a reduction in staff turnover.
The International Day for Women in Maritime is not just a celebration but a call to continue opening spaces, to make visible those who are already there, and to motivate new generations to become part of this vital industry.

Women Aboard: Inspiring Stories
This May 18th, 2025, is an opportunity to remember that behind every successful maritime operation, there is often a woman making decisions, facing extreme conditions, or ensuring the safety of the crews.
Naval engineers, platform maintenance technicians, maritime lawyers or scientists, logistics controllers, and deep-sea captains are demonstrating that gender does not define ability or vocation. Some have even broken barriers by becoming the first to command ships or lead offshore brigades. Because the sea has no gender; it has challenges, it has opportunities, and it has space for more women to take their place in the sector with talent, determination, and purpose.
